Area high school students will wrap up a productive summer engineering camp at UL Lafayette on Thursday with activities like a scavenger hunt and project demonstrations.
The scavenger hunt will require students to “do things like solve math problems to get lock combinations,” said Dr. Chris Carroll, an assistant professor of engineering.
The scavenger hunt will take place from 8-11 a.m. on Thurs., June 13. It will start in Oliver Hall, Room 116.
Students also will test and demonstrate retaining wall models they have constructed to see if they stand up to stone deposited into them with heavy equipment.
The models have been constructed to research the structure and performance of retaining walls and levees.
“They’re testing the walls to see how well they hold limestone that will be dumped behind them,” Carroll said.
The demonstrations will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at Oliver Hall.
The camp, which began Monday, is part of the Gear Up program, an acronym that stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.
The University is a partner in the program, which is administered by the Lafayette Parish School Board.
