St. Mary Boulevard at McKinley to Close

Lafayette City-Parish contractors will close E. St. Mary Boulevard to traffic at its intersection with McKinley Street for Thursday, Sept. 6, and Friday, Sept. 7.

Vehicles that travel through the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus along St. Mary Boulevard will have to use alternate routes for those two days.

Contractors will be pouring asphalt on the road to replace an opening left from a recent drainage improvem ent project. The intersection had been closed for several weeks this summer to enable city workers to install underground piping to improve drainage on campus. It had re-opened on Aug. 27 temporarily.

Sidewalks have remained closed at the intersection. Students with disabilities are encouraged to use the pedestrian crosswalk between Billeaud and Wharton halls, said Joey Pons, environmental health and safety director at UL Lafayette. That crosswalk offers a safer way to cross McKinley Street near the St. Mary Boulevard intersection.

The intersection is expected to be open for Saturday, Sept. 8, according to parish officials.
