The University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society, will initiate new members Saturday.
A ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in Angelle Hall on campus. The University’s Traditional Folk Music Ensemble will perform. A reception will be held after the ceremony at the UL Lafayette Alumni Center.
To be eligible for membership in Phi Kappa Phi:
• juniors must have completed at least 72 credit hours and rank scholastically in the top 7.5 percent of their class;
• seniors must rank in the top 10 percent of their class; and
• graduate students must rank in the upper 10 percent of their class.
UL Lafayette administration, faculty and staff members also are invited to join the University’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter based on a recommendation by an active member.
The national honor society was founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, according to the Phi Kappa Phi website. It is the nation’s oldest and most selective cross-disciplinary honor society.
The university’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter has been active since 1951.
It has earned the designation of Chapter of Excellence. That distinction recognizes flourishing chapters that foster academic excellence and engage members in service.
Each Chapter of Excellence is recognized for meeting regularly, holding annual initiation ceremonies, and frequently applying for awards, grants, and fellowships from the honor society.
