Meet general studies major Kristina Khalid-Abasi

"I have the flexibility to map out my own curriculum; I am now able to focus more on the things I enjoy most by getting a little bit of everything, but at the same time, I still have a centralized degree map I can look back to, rather than a constricted specific path."

Where I'm From

I'm from Baton Rouge and I came to UL Lafayette to study music.

Where I Am

I'm in the general studies program, where I get to choose the classes I want to take instead of being restricted to a specific curriculum.

Where I'm Going

I'm going to graduate with a degree that gives me a range of experiences and knowledge so I'm ready for a career in any industry.

Kristina Khalid-Abasi has always loved music. That passion led her to study music media at UL Lafayette.

But soon after she started her degree program at UL Lafayette, she realized her interests were broader than just music. She wanted to explore more during her college career, but she struggled to decide what to do next.

Then she found the Bachelor of General Studies program, which gave her the perfect mix of flexibility and independence while giving her a clear path to graduation.

"What made me stay was the friendly community, Cajun culture, and the general studies program," she said. "It gives me the freedom to breathe and choose for myself."

After she transferred into the general studies major, she decided to pursue a concentration in the arts and humanities. Now, she can take courses covering dozens of subjects across campus, including communication, visual arts, film, sociology, anthropology, and, of course, music.

"I have the flexibility to map out my own curriculum; I am now able to focus more on the things I enjoy most by getting a little bit of everything," Kristina said. "But at the same time, I still have a centralized degree map I can look back to, rather than a constricted specific path."
